Holi Festival in Tenerife: A Celebration of Color, Unity, and Joy
Each year, Tenerife bursts into a kaleidoscope of colors with the arrival of the Holi Festival, an event inspired by the ancient Hindu tradition that marks the beginning of spring and the triumph of good over evil. Though rooted in Indian culture, Holi has found a vibrant home on the island, bringing together locals, tourists, and the Indian diaspora in a joyful celebration of life, community, and togetherness.
Holi: From Ancient Ritual to Global Celebration
Originating in India, Holi is a centuries-old celebration with deep cultural and religious significance. Traditionally, it begins with Holika Dahan, a nighttime bonfire symbolizing the destruction of evil. The next day, Rangwali Holi sees people gather to throw colored powders, dance to traditional music, and embrace one another in a spirit of forgiveness, joy, and renewal.
Tenerife’s multicultural atmosphere and welcoming spirit have made it an ideal location for this celebration to flourish, evolving into one of the most anticipated spring festivals on the island.
Holi in the North: Puerto de la Cruz & El Penitente
In 2023, Puerto de la Cruz hosted a vibrant edition of the festival in Plaza de Europa, where hundreds gathered for a joyful explosion of colors accompanied by Indian rhythms, Bollywood dance performances, and the iconic throwing of powdered pigments.
The 2024 celebration moved to El Penitente, continuing the legacy with more music, family activities, and food stalls that introduced participants to Indian flavors and festive street food.
Both events were supported by local authorities and cultural associations, highlighting the region’s growing enthusiasm for multicultural events and inclusive celebrations.
Holi 2025: Color Comes to Costa Adeje
This year, the Holi Festival will illuminate the south of Tenerife, with Costa Adeje set to host the event on June 8, 2025, starting at 11:00 a.m. on Avenida Jardines del Duque. Organized by the Hindu Association of South Tenerife, this edition promises to be the most energetic and inclusive yet, expecting over 2,000 participants.
Festival highlights include:
-
🌈 Ecological and skin-safe colored powders in every shade imaginable
-
🎶 Live DJ sets and traditional Indian music, featuring Bollywood dance sessions
-
🍛 Gastronomic experiences with eight stalls serving Indian, Asian, and Italian cuisine
-
👨👩👧👦 Family-friendly activities, including games and music for all ages
According to Shyam Aswani, president of the Hindu Association, “Holi is more than just a festival. It’s a feeling—a chance to connect, to celebrate love and life in all its colors.” He emphasizes that the event is open to all, regardless of age or background, as a space to build community and share joy.
More Than a Festival: A Message of Unity
Beyond its vivid visuals and contagious energy, Holi in Tenerife is a testament to the island’s cultural diversity and social inclusion. The Hindu community in the south, with around 1,500 members, has been instrumental in making Holi a yearly highlight, embraced by both residents and visitors.
Participants are encouraged to wear white, allowing the colors to tell their own story throughout the day. What begins as a playful celebration often becomes a deeper experience—one of connection, laughter, and the shared desire to be part of something joyful and meaningful.
Whether you’re a long-time resident or just passing through, Holi in Tenerife is an experience not to be missed. Come ready to get messy, dance freely, and immerse yourself in one of the island’s most vibrant cultural celebrations.
